GM's IntelliLink infotainment system has been around for years in Buick and GMC cars, and continues to improve with time. In the we tested, new updates include an enhanced interface, a faster processor, and support for Apple CarPlay (GM says that Google's Android Auto will follow later this year, although it's already available on some trim lines). Add to this 4G LTE connectivity and in-cabin Wi-Fi via OnStar, and IntelliLink makes vehicles like the 2016 Sierra 1500 an even stronger buy.
Overview
The IntelliLink system in the Sierra 1500 consists of an 8-inch touch screen, below which are two large knobs. The one on the left is for power and volume, and the one on the right is for tuning and menu access. Between the two knobs are stacked buttons on the left for Radio and Media, and on the right for Home and Back. Between these are track navigation buttons and an eject button.
The 8-inch touch screen shows eight icons at a time arranged in two rows of four. The screen also has arrows on each side to access additional pages of content, and a tab at the bottom that can display a Favorites tray. You can add up to 60 favorites from not only AM, FM, and satellite radio stations, but also navigation destinations and contacts from a connected device. The home screen icons can be rearranged to your preference by pressing and holding the Home button and moving the icons as desired. This makes quick navigation around the system a cinch.
The only downside to the controls is that it took time to get used to the audio buttons on the steering wheel, which are a bit too low-profile compared with the other knobs.
OnStar and CarPlay
The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 we tested has two types of connectivity: OnStar 4G LTE on the AT&T network, and smartphone tethering for Pandora and Apple CarPlay. 4G LTE is used for all OnStar features, including telematics services like automatic crash notification and the ability to lock and unlock the doors via the OnStar Remote smartphone app. The 4G connectivity also provides in-car Wi-Fi. This embedded connectivity requires a subscription after the initial six-month trial for the Guidance plan and five-year period for the Basic plan are up, although Wi-Fi can be purchased à la carte.
For infotainment, your smartphone can connect either by Bluetooth or USB, but the only available app is Pandora. GM decided to go with Apple CarPlay (and the upcoming Android Auto) for all app-based content. In addition to Apple's own apps for phone, messaging, maps, and music, CarPlay also offers apps for Pandora, Spotify, and iHeartRadio. Whether accessing music stored on an iPhone, making calls, checking messages, or using streaming music apps, the intuitive nature of the CarPlay interface makes it all straightforward.
Mapping and navigation come free via CarPlay. GMC's own navigation system is an extra-cost option, but it does have highly detailed maps and is easy to use, and destinations can be beamed sent to it via an OnStar adviser.
Bluetooth phone pairing is easy. The system allows for text messaging, but as in other vehicles with Apple CarPlay, we found that the iOS feature works better. Other connected features included in the GMC Sierra 1500 include weather and traffic info, provided via HD Radio.
Conclusions
The IntelliLink infotainment system is a useful and intuitive infotainment system that will please buyers of Buick and GMC vehicles. That said, our Editors' Choice remains the Entune system in the 2016 Toyota Tacoma for its flexible (and free) cloud connectivity. The Chrysler Uconnect system in the Ram 1500 is another long-time favorite. Still, IntelliLink is a solid option, and just one more reason to consider the Sierra 1500 over its competitors.
